One of the last untouched river corridors in the North Bay

“What struck me as remarkable is that remnants of the once extensive riparian forest - with majestic oaks, willow, and California box elder, and wet meadow, still remain along this reach of the river.

That’s just not a common sight along California rivers.“ - Wendy Eliot, Conservation Leader

Our Vision.

The Petaluma River connects our community - it’s time for us to embrace and grow that connection. We envision a Petaluma River Greenway that preserves the river corridor and its sensitive habitat while providing climate change resilience, recreation, education and restoration opportunities.

The Upper River.

An untouched tract of oak woodlands remains along the upper reaches of the Petaluma River. Much of this section is under threat of development and needs to be protected now. The area, a seasonal wetlands, provides much-needed flood protection during winter storms. It is home to ancient oaks and is rich in biodiversity, providing habitat for black-tailed deer, river otters, many smaller mammals and migratory birds.

Ours to Protect.

The Petaluma River is 19 miles long, stretching from the Oak Savannah to San Pablo Bay, and passes through the largest ancient tidal marsh in California. Along the River’s winding twists and turns it passes through miles of open space with breathtaking vistas and untouched wilderness. With the dual threats of climate change and development, now is the time to protect this remarkable land.

Your Support.

We need your help as we build this vision. We are currently conducting a parcel study and hydrology research to determine viable options for acquisition and restoration. We need your support to fund this work and keep the upper river safe from development. Any amount helps. Please donate to protect the Petaluma River today.

Building Resiliency.

As our climate changes it becomes even more important to protect our natural resources. The Petaluma River, and with it our community, will face rising seas in the next several decades. The land management decisions we make today will determine the impacts we and future generations will have. Petaluma is becoming a leader in the environmental movement, restricting new gas stations, creating a climate commission and recognition as one of three Cool Cities. Now we must continue that work by preserving

Take Action.
